Nationally designated for its magnificent interior, Annandale House serves as a monument to the Victorian style of design, known as the "Aesthetic Art Movement." Popularized by Oscar Wilde, this movement encouraged the use of colour and decorative detailing in all areas of the home. From extravagant, hand-painted ceilings and elaborate inlaid floors to ornate mantles, hinges and stained glass, Annandale truly combines the best of what the Aesthetes professed. Built in the 1880's by E.D. Tillson, first Mayor of Tillsonburg, the plans for Annandale House are based on standard pattern book design, "Brick Villa #2" taken from Wm. M. Woollett's "Villas and Cottages" and is a wonderful example of standardized house designs in Canadian architecture of the 19th Century. A tour provides visitors the opportunity to take in both restored period rooms and local history galleries. In the main gallery, “Something Old, Something New” features bridal fashions and traditions through the years from the 1800s. Don’t miss the special new exhibits: “Dr. Tillson Lever Harrison: Scoundrel or Hero” and “Annandale Model Farm.”
